USSSA Elections Bring in More Women as Mugisha Is Confirmed for a Second Term
In a move aimed at amplifying women’s voices, the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association, through its 44th Elective Assembly, has expanded the number of executive members. Justus Mugisha also returns unopposed as president for the 2026-2030 term.
The assembly was held at Front Page in Namasuba on Saturday, August 1st. Eight women were elected to the 20-member executive. They include the president, three vice presidents, the Secretary for Women’s Affairs, and regional representatives.
The eight women on the executive are: First Vice President Harriet Magerate Apolot, who was promoted from Third Vice President to replace Hajji Twahir Kitezaala; Celia Amanya, who was elected as Third Vice President; and Apolot Godliver, who was elected Secretary for Women’s Affairs.
The other five women were elected to represent each of the USSSA regions: Viola Grace Kyolaba for Central, Miriam Makeba for Northern, Elizabeth Tindimwebwa for Western, Alice Alwenyi, confirmed in absentia, for Kampala, and Beatrice Mafabi for Eastern.
Of the eight women, Amanya was the only one who faced a vote. She won 75-40 against Richard Muhumuza, who had served on the executive for a long time.
The race originally had three candidates but was reduced to two after the last-minute withdrawal of Hajji Twahir Kitezaala, who directed his supporters to vote for Amanya.
During the electoral process, only four additional positions required a vote. Christopher Mande and Fred Kyaligonza won to represent Western and will join Tindimwebwa, while Moses Obura and Francis Bithola Ocukune won to represent Northern.
All other positions were won unopposed, including President Justus Mugisha, who begins his second consecutive term with a largely overhauled executive. Only a few members from the 2022-2026 term were retained.
