Ugandan Goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi Joins New Club After Mechal Exit
The future of Ugandan international goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi has finally been decided, with the shot-stopper agreeing to join Ethiopian Premier League side Ethio Electric.
Alionzi, who was the only player from the Ethiopian Premier League to feature at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, had become one of the most sought-after free agents in the country following the expiration of his contract with Mechal.
According to reports from Soccer Ethiopia, the 27-year-old attracted interest from several top-flight clubs in Ethiopia, but has ultimately chosen Ethio Electric as his next destination.
The Ugandan has spent the last two seasons establishing himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the Ethiopian top flight with Mechal. His consistent performances, commanding presence in the box and impressive shot-stopping ability made him a fan favourite and earned him regular call-ups to the Uganda Cranes, for whom he has been a mainstay since 2022.
Before moving to Ethiopia, Alionzi spent six successful years with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) FC in the Uganda Premier League, where he built his reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in East Africa.
His move to Ethio Electric is seen as a major statement of intent by the club, who are looking to strengthen their squad significantly ahead of the new season. For Alionzi, the switch presents a fresh challenge and an opportunity to continue his impressive career in Ethiopian football after two memorable years with Mechal.
