Uganda Faces Tough Reality in FIFA Rankings Crested Cranes Need Greater Investment to catch up

The Uganda women’s national football team, the Crested Cranes, is ranked fourth in the CECAFA region, 27th on the African continent, and 148th globally in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings.

Rwanda has plummeted to an all-time low of 169th position, their worst ranking in history. The Rwandan team, which had reached a high of 105th in 2017, is now struggling to regain its former glory.

Other East African countries: Ethiopia ranked (138th), Burundi ranked (179th), and South Sudan (195th).

Tanzania and Kenya lead the pack in East Africa. Tanzania, ranked 121st, and Kenya, ranked 133rd, are the top-ranked teams in East Africa, ahead of Uganda. Harambee Starlets, Kenya’s national team, has shown significant improvement, climbing seven places from 140th to 133rd. Tanzania’s ranking is a testament to their growing strength in the region.

Globally, Spain retains its top spot, followed closely by the United States, Germany, England, and Sweden. The latest rankings have seen Germany rise two places, while Sweden dropped to fifth. Nigeria, Africa’s top-ranked team, dropped one place but remains the continent’s leader. A record 198 teams are now part of the rankings, with Chad and Libya making their first appearance.
