Uganda Teams Begin Commonwealth Games Training in Glasgow
Uganda’s contingent has stepped up preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games after holding their first training sessions in Glasgow, Scotland, with competition set to begin on Friday.
The team settled into the Games Village on arrival before athletes across different disciplines started fine-tuning ahead of the opening ceremony and the start of events.
Bombers Begin Training at Kynoch Gym
Uganda’s boxing team, the Bombers, held their first workout at Kynoch Boxing Gym under head coach Twaibu Mayanja and assistant coach Hassan Khalil.
Gym owner and local boxing agent Sam Kynoch was also on hand to welcome the team and offered words of encouragement.
“The key words are discipline and hard work. If you do that, you never know. I have a Uganda contact here called Lule. He may call +256,” Kynoch told the fighters.
Head coach Mayanja said the team had settled in quickly.
“The team has adjusted well after the journey. This first session was about loosening up, getting familiar with the environment, and preparing mentally and physically for the competition ahead,” Mayanja said.
The session featured Ibrahim Khemis, Alfred Ojok, Angel Katushabe, Emily Nakalema, and team captain Nuhu Batte, who will be the first Ugandan boxer in the ring.
Batte will open Uganda’s boxing campaign on Friday in the men’s welterweight (65kg) Round of 32 against Nigeria’s Abdul Wahabu.
“We have prepared well for this moment. I’m confident in the work we’ve done, and I’m looking forward to giving my best and making Uganda proud,” Batte said.
The Bombers continue on Saturday with light heavyweight Alfred Ojok facing Niue’s Anitelea Launiu, while Ibrahim Khemis takes on Zambia’s Albert Ngulube.
Other Ugandan Teams in Action
Away from boxing, Uganda’s women’s 3×3 basketball team begins its campaign on Friday with group matches against Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Kenya.
Uganda will also be represented in para-powerlifting, swimming, and para-swimming as the country’s quest for medals gets underway across multiple disciplines.
