According to Okocha, the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) abandoned them in an American hotel, refusing to pay hotel bills, which forced the players to take matters into their own hands

The Struggle is Real

The team woke up one morning to find their training coach and bus gone, taken away by the spare key due to unpaid fees.

For a week, the hotel served them the same meal every day – rice and sauce – warning them they should be grateful to still be there due to the NFA’s non-payment.

Okocha and some senior players had to use their debit cards to pay for the hotel and even rent minivans to continue training.

The Dream Team won the gold medal, defeating Brazil 4-3 in the semifinals and Argentina 3-2 in the final.

This victory marked a significant moment for Nigerian and African football, with Okocha’s team becoming the first African footballing team to win Olympic gold.
