Busitema University To Take Part In FASU Games
Busitema University has stepped up its ambitions on the African university sports scene after sending a 15-member delegation to represent the institution at the 12th Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games in Cairo, Egypt.
The continental showpiece runs from September 8 to 16, 2026, bringing together more than 136 universities from 26 African countries to compete across 21 sporting disciplines.
Busitema will compete in three disciplines—athletics, tennis and chess—giving its student-athletes an opportunity to test themselves against some of the best university talent on the continent.

The Games will be hosted at Cairo University, with The American University in Cairo, Badr University in Cairo and the British University in Egypt serving as co-hosts.
For Busitema, the trip is more than a competition. It is an opportunity to expose its students to international-level university sport while strengthening the university’s profile within Africa’s growing university sports community.
Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Waako officiated at the team’s flag-off ceremony and encouraged the delegation to represent the university with distinction during the continental competition.

Busitema has already established a footprint in FASU competitions. The university won the FASU Mini Games Championship in 2022, claimed silver in the 2024 FASU Tennis Slam hosted by Makerere University and secured bronze in the 2024 FASU King of Africa Rugby competition hosted by the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) in Nairobi, Kenya.
The university hopes that its latest appearance in Cairo will add another chapter to that growing record.
Three disciplines, different tests
The Busitema delegation will compete in athletics, tennis and chess, disciplines that present very different challenges to the students.

Athletics will test speed, strength and endurance, while tennis will demand technical ability, concentration and discipline. Chess, meanwhile, will place a premium on strategic thinking, patience and mental strength.
The diversity of the delegation reflects the university’s growing investment in sport as part of student development.
Speaking about the importance of the trip, Dean of Students and Head of Delegation Joseph Erogo Wanyama said the Games provide an important platform for the students to gain international exposure while interacting with universities and sports administrators from across Africa.
The technical side of the delegation will be led by Dr. Agnes Baluka Masajja, Busitema University’s Deputy Chief of Sports, who will serve as the technical delegate.

For the student-athletes, however, the immediate objective is clear—compete strongly, gain valuable continental experience and fly the Busitema flag high in Cairo.

As competition gets underway in Cairo, Busitema’s athletes will be seeking medals, but equally important will be the experience of competing on one of Africa’s biggest university sporting platforms.
Their participation reinforces the university’s commitment to developing student talent beyond the classroom and building a sporting identity capable of competing beyond Uganda’s borders.
