Lira University produced a spirited comeback to defeat former champions Kyambogo University 2-1 in the Pepsi University Football League, launching their Group C campaign with a memorable home victory on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The Northern Uganda-based side recovered from an early setback to claim maximum points, with Solomon Okello delivering the decisive late strike after Emmanuel Ogeng had cancelled out Kyambogo’s opener.
Kyambogo started brightly and took the lead in the 18th minute through Ramathan Matovu, putting the visitors in control of the contest.
However, Lira responded almost immediately, with Ogeng restoring parity just two minutes later to bring the hosts back into the game and set up a tense battle.
Both sides continued to compete for control, but Lira ultimately found the breakthrough late in the match when Okello struck to complete the comeback and secure all three points.
The victory gives Lira an encouraging start to their Group C campaign and adds to their growing reputation for challenging established sides in the university competition.
Lira had previously stunned former champions Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in 2025, and their latest triumph over Kyambogo further underlines their ability to upset the league’s traditional heavyweights.
For Kyambogo, the defeat is a disappointing start to their campaign after surrendering an early lead against a determined Lira side.
Lira will now look to build on the momentum as the Pepsi University Football League group-stage action continues.
