Vipers Start New Season with FUFA Super Cup Triumph

Vipers SC have begun the new Ugandan football season on a high after defeating Kitara FC 3–1 to lift the FUFA Super Cup at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Saturday.
The Uganda Premier League champions overcame Uganda Cup holders Kitara in an entertaining season opening clash, with Abdulkarim Watambala, Odili Chukwuma and Gusto Mulongo getting on the scoresheet for the Venoms.
Vipers took control of the contest before halftime when Chukwuma headed home from close range after excellent work by Mulongo on the wing.
Kitara responded strongly after the break and levelled through Martin Kizza, briefly putting the Cup holders back into contention.

However, Vipers quickly restored their advantage when Watambala finished a well worked move to put the league champions back in front.
Mulongo then put the result beyond doubt late in the game, rising highest to head home a well-delivered cross from Farouk Miya and seal a 3–1 victory.
The triumph gives new Vipers head coach Denis Lavagne his first competitive trophy since taking charge, providing an ideal start to his tenure in Ugandan football.
Lavagne had identified the Super Cup as an important part of his preparations for the new campaign, particularly with Vipers also facing a demanding CAF Champions League schedule.

Before kick off, the French coach had warned his players about Kitara’s physical approach and direct style, stressing the importance of winning aerial duels and competing for second balls.
His players responded with the intensity required, gradually taking control of the game and making their chances count.
The victory also continues Vipers’ strong run after their successful 2025/26 campaign, in which they captured the Uganda Premier League title.
Kitara, who earned their place in the Super Cup after winning the Uganda Cup, will now have to regroup ahead of the new league season.
For Vipers, however, the message is clear, the champions are ready to defend their crown, and they have already added another piece of silverware to the cabinet.
