UPL MATCHDAY ONE: CHAMPIONS STUNNED AS UPPC, NEC MAKE STATEMENTS
The 2026/27 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season has kicked off with plenty of drama, as two of the country’s biggest clubs suffered defeats on an opening weekend that immediately showed just how unpredictable the new campaign could be.
Reigning champions Vipers SC were stunned at home by newly promoted Entebbe UPPC, while KCCA FC suffered defeat in the Lugogo derby against NEC FC.
The weekend also saw URA FC, BUL FC, Lugazi and Blacks Power begin their campaigns with victories.
UPPC PRODUCE THE BIGGEST SHOCK
The biggest surprise came at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, where Entebbe UPPC announced themselves to the top flight with a historic 1-0 victory over defending champions Vipers SC.
The decisive moment came through a Bady Da Silva own goal after a defensive misunderstanding, handing the newcomers maximum points against the champions.
It was a remarkable result for UPPC, who were competing in the top flight for the first time, while Vipers were left to reflect on a disappointing start under new head coach Denis Lavagne.
For the champions, the defeat is an early warning that defending their title will not be an easy assignment.
NEC TURN THE TABLES ON KCCA
At MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, NEC FC enjoyed the perfect response to their FUFA Super 8 final defeat to KCCA FC.
The Diehards defeated their city rivals 2-0 in the opening Lugogo derby, with Richard Basangwa putting NEC in front before Pius Obuya added the second.
The result not only gave NEC three points but also delivered early bragging rights in one of Ugandan football’s biggest rivalries.
For KCCA, it was a disappointing start, particularly after beating the same opponents in the Super 8 final just days earlier.
URA, BUL AND LUGAZI START WITH VICTORIES
URA FC also enjoyed a positive opening weekend after defeating Maroons 2-1 away from home.
BUL FC, meanwhile, edged Express FC 1-0, while Lugazi FC defeated newly promoted Kigezi HomeBoyz 2-1as to welcome them to the top tier league.
Blacks Power also collected maximum points after a narrow 1-0 victory over Ntugasaze in what was described as the new comers derby.
These results have given the winners an early advantage as the league table begins to take shape.
DRAWN RESULTS
There were also two goalless or closely fought encounters.
UPDF and Kataka played out a 0-0 draw, while SC Villa and Kitara FC shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
The results underline the competitive nature of the opening round, with several teams already showing that they are capable of taking points from more established opponents.
MATCHDAY ONE FLOPS
The biggest disappointments of the opening weekend were undoubtedly Vipers SC and KCCA FC.
Vipers’ home defeat to UPPPC was arguably the biggest shock of the round, while KCCA’s 2-0 loss to NEC was a painful reversal after their Super 8 triumph over the same opponents.
Express FC and Maroons also failed to start the season with points after suffering narrow defeats.
THE BIG SURPRISES
Entebbe UPPC emerge as the biggest winners in terms of expectations, while NEC FC’s derby victory sends an early statement of intent.
The opening weekend has therefore delivered a clear message that the new UPL season may be far more open than many expected.
With the champions already beaten and KCCA suffering an early setback, the race for the title, continental places and survival has started with plenty of intrigue.
And if Matchday One is anything to go by, Ugandan football fans could be in for a fascinating 2026/27 season.
