South Korea Come From Behind To Beat Czech Republic 2-1 In World Cup Thriller

South Korea kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over the Czech Republic at Estadio Ekron, extending their strong record against European opposition. The Group A clash was also a milestone for African officiating, with a full African team taking charge.

The first half ended goalless, continuing South Korea’s unusual World Cup record. They have now gone 14 consecutive World Cup matches without leading at half-time. The last time they did was on June 12, 2010 against Greece – exactly 16 years to the day.

The Czech Republic broke the deadlock in the 59th minute through Wolves forward Ladislav Krejčí. But South Korea responded quickly. Hwang Hee-chan levelled in the 67th minute with a sharp finish after being set up by Lee Kang-in.

The Czechs thought they had retaken the lead in the 76th minute, but Tomas Soucek was flagged offside in the build-up to a free-kick routine, and the goal was ruled out. South Korea then struck the winner 10 minutes to stoppage time. A long ball from halfway found Hwang Hee-chan making a blistering run down the right. He cut it back for substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu, who tapped in from close range. The Besiktas forward had only come on in the 69th minute.

The result marked the third straight World Cup win for South Korea against European opposition. The Czech Republic scored their first World Cup goal since 2006, but their wait for a win at the tournament goes on.

The match also highlighted Africa’s presence on the officiating stage. Referee Amir Mohamed led the team, assisted by Mahmoud Abouelregal and Ahmed Hossam Taha, with Mahmoud Ashour on VAR.
