Integrity Questions Cloud Al Hilal’s $100K CECAFA Kagame Cup Sponsorship

Sudan’s Al Hilal Club has pledged $100,000 to sponsor the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali, Rwanda.

The news came just a day after the draw for the 12-team tournament was conducted. According to the Rwanda Football Association, Al Hilal SC is not only a sponsor but also one of the competing teams.

That overlap is already causing unease.

Al Hilal SC is a top Sudanese club based in Omdurman. Because of the ongoing civil war in Sudan, they have been playing their home games in the Rwanda Premier League.

Now, the same club that will chase the Kagame Cup trophy is also helping to fund it.

For many, that raises red flags around integrity. How can CECAFA ensure fairness in refereeing, scheduling, and prize money distribution when a participant is also a financial backer

The tournament prizes are significant: $30K for winners, $20K for runners-up, and $10K for third place. But credibility could cost more than that if questions linger.

It highlights a bigger issue: CECAFA still struggles to attract independent commercial sponsors. Relying on a competing club to fill the gap may keep the lights on this year, but it does little to build long-term trust with brands.

Al Hilal’s Credentials

On the field, they deserve to be there.
Last season Al Hilal finished with 74 points from 34 games in Rwanda. League rules meant APR FC were still crowned champions as the top Rwandan side.

In the CAF Champions League they also made waves, topping a group containing eventual winners Mamelodi Sundowns with 11 points, before bowing out to RS Berkane in the quarter-finals.

In Kigali they land in Group C with Rayon Sports (Rwanda), Tusker FC (Kenya) and KVZ SC (Zanzibar).

The Kagame Cup has history and passion. The next step is turning that into a product sponsors can trust — without compromising the integrity of the competition.
