Lugogo Derby: KCCA, NEC Renew Rivalry in Season Opener

The Lugogo derby takes centre stage on Saturday as KCCA FC host NEC FC at MTN Philip Omondi Stadium at 4:00pm, just days after KCCA edged NEC 1-0 in the FUFA Super 8 final.
NEC assistant coach Badru Kaddu says the Super 8 encounter provides valuable lessons ahead of the league opener.
“It is a tricky game because we have just played them, but we have to use the lessons from that game and apply them in tomorrow’s match.”
Kaddu says NEC have focused on improving their finishing after creating chances without converting them.
“We have worked more on sharpening our strikers. We create many chances but waste them. If we are to compete, we have to score goals and also make sure we don’t concede.”
Despite sharing Philip Omondi Stadium, Kaddu insists there is no bad blood between the neighbours.
“There is no beef between the two teams. It is healthy competition on the pitch. Such competition is good for the fans and all stakeholders because it attracts good football.”
KCCA coach Brian Ssenyondo, meanwhile, says the Super 8 victory is already history and the club has bigger ambitions this season.
“The win in the Super 8 final ended on the pitch. Our targets for this season are huge.”
KCCA have also undergone a major squad overhaul, but Ssenyondo believes the new signings were carefully chosen to help the club compete.
“All the new players we have signed are the pieces the club wanted to compete again.”
The teams’ most recent meeting ended KCCA 1-0 NEC in the Super 8 final, while NEC had earlier beaten KCCA 3-1 in the league in February 2026.
With the Super 8 trophy settled, attention now turns to the points as the two Lugogo neighbours begin their 2026/27 league campaign.
