Kabalega Secondary School will return Masindi to the national schools football spotlight in 2027 after winning the hosting rights for the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) National Boys’ Football Championship, with alumni pledging to revamp facilities ahead of the tournament.
The Bunyoro-based school emerged victorious following a competitive bidding process conducted by USSSA and the Ministry of Education and Sports, ending a 12-year wait to host the prestigious championship.

The hosting rights, announced on Thursday, October 29, 2026, present Kabalega with an opportunity to restore its national profile, improve sporting infrastructure and stimulate economic activity in Masindi.
Kabalega headteacher Jackson Katusiime welcomed the decision, describing it as a turning point for a school that has faced visibility and infrastructure challenges.
“We are very thankful to USSSA for granting us the right to host the National Football Boys Championship 2027,” Katusiime said.

“We have had visibility challenges and had gone off the map, but this will put us back on the national scene and return the glory of Kabalega.”
Katusiime said the school would use the opportunity to mobilise partners to rehabilitate its infrastructure, promising significant progress before the championship.
“As you noted, we have had infrastructural challenges, but I promise you by January, through our partners, we will have these structures rehabilitated in preparation for the games,” he added.
The school’s hosting bid was strengthened by its presentation of 13 football pitches against the minimum requirement of eight, demonstrating its potential to accommodate the national competition.

USSSA president Justus Mugisha said Kabalega earned the hosting rights on merit, with regional and zonal rotation, preparedness and the school’s determination to bring the championship back to Masindi among the key considerations.
Mbarara High School was named the standby host, should Kabalega fail to meet the required standards during the final compliance assessment scheduled for January 2027.
Old Boys promise support
Kabalega’s alumni have pledged to rally behind the school, with Bugaya County Member of Parliament Hon. Pius Wakabi Rujumba, who also serves on the school’s sports committee, promising full support.

“We are very excited as Old Boys that Kabalega Secondary School will host the USSSA National Boys Football Championship 2027,” Wakabi said.
“We are ready to support the school fully and I am sure next year’s championship will be the best ever organised in the country.”
Wakabi said the championship would provide a platform for alumni and other stakeholders to rehabilitate and upgrade the school’s facilities while positioning Bunyoro to benefit from future major sporting events.
“This tournament is a precursor for AFCON in Bunyoro. The business community, food vendors, hoteliers and the entire service sector in Bunyoro will benefit immensely,” he said.

The tournament is expected to attract teams, players, coaches, officials and supporters from across the country, creating business opportunities for accommodation providers, food vendors, transport operators and other service providers.
Katusiime also highlighted the potential benefits for the surrounding community, noting that the influx of visitors would bring money into the local economy.
“The athletes and officials coming will come with money, creating business for the local community and an opportunity for parents who support the school,” he said.
Five schools awarded hosting rights
Kabalega’s selection was part of a wider allocation of hosting rights for five major USSSA national championships in 2027.
St. Kagwa High School in Bushenyi will host Ball Games I and Athletics for the first time, working alongside Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School, which will also make its debut as a host.

Nyakasura School and co-hosts Kyebambe will stage Ball Games II, while Janan Secondary School Bombo will host the Elite Games in partnership with Standard High School Zzana, Ndejje Campus.
Seroma Christian High School in Mukono secured the Swimming Championship.
Seroma was also designated as the standby host for Ball Games I, while St. Mary’s College Rushoroza will serve as the reserve venue for Ball Games II.
All selected schools must pass a final compliance inspection in January 2027, with assessments covering sporting facilities, accommodation, security, medical services and other commitments made during the bidding process.
The assessment will be conducted on a pass-or-fail basis, with standby venues activated if the primary hosts fail to meet the required standards.
For Kabalega, however, the immediate task is clear: turn its hosting victory into tangible improvements and deliver a championship that restores the school’s standing in Ugandan school sport while giving Masindi a memorable national football spectacle.
