GOMBA END SSESE’S HOME UNBEATEN RUN AS BUDDU AND BUSIRO PREPARE FOR HOME CLASHES
Ssese 1-2 Gomba
Record champions Gomba have ended Ssese’s 9-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory at Lutoboka, completing revenge for last season’s defeat.
Raymond Kayemba netted his 3rd goal of the season to give Ssese an early lead, as the Sharks looked to make the most of their home advantage on the islands.
But Gomba showed character. Defender Collins Ssemanda leveled matters in the 35th minute with a stunning free-kick to make it 1-1 at halftime.
The five-time champions came out stronger after the break and struck early. Peter Kyomuhendo, their most consistent player this season, put Gomba ahead just 2 minutes into the second half.
That goal made Gomba only the second team to beat Ssese at home since Edrisa Walusimbi took charge. The other was Buluuli, who beat them in Walusimbi’s first game in June 2025. Since then, Ssese had won 7 and drawn 2 of their 9 games.
The result takes Gomba to 15 points in 2nd place in the Masengere Group, behind leaders Kyaggwe on 16 points. It also puts them on the verge of reaching the Masaza Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2023, when they lost to Bulemeezi in the final at Wankulukuku.
Ssese remain on 12 points and are now in a tricky spot. With both of their remaining games away from the island, they must beat Kyaggwe and Bulemeezi to keep hopes of direct qualification alive, or fight for one of the best runners-up spots.
Busiro and Mawokota are also in that chase, but their fate depends on how Ssese perform.
Busiro host Kyaggwe tomorrow, August 16, at Trinity College Nabbingo. On the same day, Mawokota host Bulemeezi at Buwama Playground.
