Women’s Football Symposium to Shift Focus to Data-Driven Awards as Finance Trust Bank Pledges UGX100m
Women’s football in Uganda is set for another major boost as Finance Trust Bank commits UGX 100 million towards a one day Women Football Symposium designed to shape the next phase of the women’s game.
The symposium will take place on September 9, 2026, at Skys Hotel in Naguru, just three days before the 2026/27 Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League season kicks off on September 12.
The event brings together stakeholders from FUFA, women’s football clubs, the corporate sector and the media to examine the progress made in recent years, identify persistent challenges and explore ways of making women’s football more competitive, visible and sustainable.
However, this year’s gathering comes with a notable change in emphasis.
Unlike the previous symposium held three years ago, when recognition was not centred as strongly on comprehensive statistical performance, the 2026 edition is expected to put greater emphasis on individual achievements and measurable performance from the previous season.
Outstanding players and coaches from the 2025/26 Women Super League and Women Elite League campaigns will be recognised, with awards expected to include the Best Player, Best Coach and Best Upcoming Talent. Additional categories are still being considered.
The shift towards performance based recognition gives the symposium an added sporting dimension, allowing players and coaches to be celebrated not simply for their reputation but for what they delivered during the season.
Speaking at the announcement, FUFA 2nd Vice President Dr Aza Taibuh said the rapid development of women’s football has created a need for stakeholders to continually assess where the game is headed.
“Women’s football in Uganda has grown tremendously in the last few years. The Super League and Elite League have been strengthened, and we also now have Regional Women Football Leagues.”
Dr Aza also pointed to the improved performances of Uganda’s various women’s national teams at regional and continental level as evidence of the progress made.
“The game has, without a doubt, grown, but there is more to be done, hence this symposium,”
Finance Trust Bank, the title sponsor of both the Women Super League and Women Elite League, has committed UGX 100 million in cash sponsorship towards the symposium, further underlining its investment in the women’s game.
Percy Lubega, the bank’s Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, said the institution’s involvement is driven by its broader commitment to supporting women.
“As a bank, we are committed to putting women first and helping women grow in every sector. This is why we have been sponsoring the women’s football leagues and why we are today also headlining this Women Football Symposium.”
The timing of the symposium is significant. It will provide an opportunity to assess the three year journey since the previous gathering while looking at how the game can build on the expansion of the competition structure, improved national team performances and the growing involvement of corporate partners.
The introduction of Regional Women Football Leagues, alongside the Super League and Elite League, has also widened the competitive pathway for female players and created more opportunities for talent identification.
The 2026 symposium will therefore seek to move beyond celebrating progress and focus on what the next three years should look like, particularly in areas such as player development, coaching, commercialisation, media visibility, club sustainability and performance standards.
With the 2026/27 Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League scheduled to begin on September 12, the symposium could provide the perfect platform to usher in a new era in Ugandan women’s football one where success is increasingly measured, recognised and rewarded through performance and statistics.
The event is expected to bring together the people responsible for driving that transformation, with the ultimate goal of building a stronger and more sustainable women’s football ecosystem in Uganda.
