Kyagwe March On: Bukunja Warriors Seal Masaza Cup Semi-Final Berth In Style
Kyagwe produced a commanding performance to brush aside Mawogola 3-1 in the second leg of their Masaza Cup quarter-final tie, sealing a comprehensive 5-2 aggregate victory and booking their place in the semi-finals in emphatic fashion. The Bukunja Warriors were in control from start to finish, showing the quality and depth that has made them one of the most feared sides in this year’s competition.
Under the guidance of coach Ronald Ssali, Kyagwe started with real purpose and intensity. Their high press and quick ball circulation unsettled Mawogola early, and it took just three minutes for that dominance to pay off. Midfielder Matege Innocent broke the deadlock with a well-taken strike moments after kick-off, sending the home fans into early celebration and setting the platform for a dominant display.
If the opener was about quick thinking, the next two goals were about ruthless finishing from the team’s in-form marksman.
Lubwama Lauben, the lethal forward who joined Kyagwe from Busujju, proved once again why he is regarded as one of the best acquisitions of the tournament. He doubled the lead 12 minutes later with a composed finish inside the box before completing his brace in the 19th minute to put the tie beyond Mawogola. With three goals over the two legs, Lauben has established himself as Kyagwe’s talisman in the knockout stages.
Mawogola managed to reduce the deficit in the 36th minute through Emmanuel Opolot, who took full advantage of a rare blunder by Kyagwe goalkeeper Byamukama Joel.
The custodian gifted the ball to the opposition in a moment many fans felt was completely avoidable. The error did not go unpunished by the technical bench, as Byamukama was immediately substituted and replaced by Katongole, who steadied the ship for the rest of the encounter.
The second half turned more physical as Mawogola pushed to restore some pride. The referee was forced into action with two yellow cards. Kyagwe left-back Shikanga Emmanuel was booked in the 77th minute for illegal use of arms, while Mawogola’s midfielder Ssenono Asuman was cautioned seven minutes earlier for holding an opponent to halt a promising attack.
At the final whistle, Mukono erupted in jubilation as the Bukunja Warriors confirmed their progression to the last four. The victory sets up a mouth-watering semi-final derby against resilient rivals Bugerere, a clash that promises to be one of the most heated and entertaining encounters of this year’s Masaza Cup.
