Senegal Thump Iraq 5-0 to Reach World Cup Round of 32

The Lions of Teranga produced a dominant display to thrash Iraq 5-0 yesterday and book their place in the World Cup Round of 32. Senegal finished among the best third-placed teams, but it was the manner of the victory that made headlines.

Pape Diarra gave Senegal the perfect start with a goal in the 4th minute, and the contest tilted further in their favor when Iraq’s Rebin Sulaka was shown a red card 11 minutes later. Reduced to 10 men, Iraq struggled to contain a rampant Senegal side that grew in confidence as the game wore on.

Sarr doubled the lead in the 56th minute before Pape Gueye added a third three minutes later. The Villarreal midfielder then struck again in the 71st minute to make it 4-0 and register his second of the afternoon. Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye completed the rout in the 82nd minute with Senegal’s fifth.

The result was also historic for African football. With eight goals scored across the group stage, Senegal became the first African nation ever to reach that tally in a single World Cup group phase. The previous record of six goals was held jointly by Nigeria in 1994, Algeria in 2014, and Morocco in this tournament.
