King Ceasor University opened their new Pepsi University Football League campaign in style, securing a historic 2-0 victory over Soroti University in Soroti City on Saturday to register their first-ever win in the competition.

The Ggaba Road-based side, who endured a difficult debut season last year, scoring just one goal, showed significant improvement under head coach Derrick Kasumba to claim maximum points away from home.

King Ceasor started brightly and nearly took the lead in the second minute, but Mugerwa Joachim failed to capitalise on an early opportunity.

The visitors soon identified gaps behind Soroti’s defensive line and exploited them with long balls, a tactic that paid off in the 25th minute when Kayondo Devis fired home first-time after connecting with a pass from Magala Hassan.

Soroti had a chance to respond four minutes later, but Aelenyu Allan fired wide from a promising position as the hosts struggled to make their opportunities count.

Devis missed two further chances before the break, leaving King Ceasor with a narrow lead at half-time.

The visitors maintained their attacking approach after the restart and doubled their advantage in the 59th minute. Mugisha Shedrack stepped up to convert a free kick won on the left flank, just outside the penalty area, putting King Ceasor firmly in control.

Soroti pushed forward in search of a comeback but lacked the finishing touch, repeatedly sending their efforts off target against a disciplined King Ceasor defence.

The visitors faced a late test when Barigye Willis was sent off in the 83rd minute after receiving a second booking. However, Kasumba’s charges held their ground with 10 men to preserve their two-goal advantage and record a clean sheet.

The victory marks a significant milestone for King Ceasor, offering an encouraging start after their struggles in their maiden campaign and a platform to build on as the league progresses.

The Pepsi University Football League continues on Sunday, with Lira University hosting Gulu University in Lira.
