In Memoriam: Peter Kabugo’s Legacy in Ugandan Football

It’s been a year since Ugandan football lost one of its promising talents, Assistant Referee Peter Kabugo, who tragically passed away on November 1, 2024, while officiating a Uganda Premier League match between SC Villa and UPDF FC at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

Kabugo, who was just 28 years old at the time, collapsed on the field in the 73rd minute after SC Villa’s Charles Lwanga scored a fifth goal. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Bismillah Hospital .

Kabugo was a rising star in Ugandan refereeing, having started his career in the Kagadi District Football Association and working his way up to the Uganda Premier League.

His dedication and passion for the sport earned him recognition within the football community. At the time of his passing, Kabugo was among the FUFA Elite Referees eyeing a FIFA Badge, a testament to his hard work and commitment to excellence in refereeing .

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) paid tribute to Kabugo’s memory, extending condolences to his family, loved ones, and the football fraternity. In respect, all clubs in the Star Times Uganda Premier League observed a moment of silence before each game .
