The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed Ethiopian tactician Asefa Firew Hailegebreal as head coach of all Uganda’s national women’s football teams through 2029.
Asefa returns to the Ugandan women’s game with a strong domestic record, having previously coached Kampala Queens FC, now known as KCCA Women FC, between 2024 and 2026.
His biggest success came during the 2024/25 season when he guided Kampala Queens to the FUFA Women Super League title and the FUFA Women’s Cup, underlining his credentials as one of the leading coaches in Uganda’s women’s football.

The appointment comes after FUFA parted ways with South African coach Shyle Botes on September 27, 2026.
Botes had been in charge of Uganda’s national women’s teams since November 15, 2023. During his tenure, Uganda secured bronze medals at the 2023 African Games and the 2025 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship.
Asefa, however, will have little time to settle into his new role before being thrown straight into competitive action.
Uganda faces Zambia on October 8 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, in the second round of the 2028 Olympic Games women’s football qualifiers.
The Ethiopian coach will therefore have a short window to assess the players, shape his squad and introduce his tactical ideas ahead of his first assignment with the national team.

His mandate extends beyond the senior Uganda women’s team, with FUFA placing all the national women’s sides under his leadership until 2029.
The move is part of FUFA’s effort to create greater continuity and a structured development pathway linking Uganda’s women’s national teams across the different age categories.
With the Olympic qualifiers arriving almost immediately, Asefa’s first challenge will be to quickly translate his successful domestic experience into international results.
