Uganda Bounce Back With Dominant Bowling Display to Stun Hosts Tanzania

Uganda’s World Cup dream is alive.
A day after falling to Nigeria, the Baby Victoria Pearls responded in style with a ruthless 5-wicket victory over hosts Tanzania at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division One Qualifiers in Dar es Salaam.
Asked to bowl first after losing the toss, Uganda produced one of the most disciplined bowling displays of the tournament to bundle out Tanzania for just 41 in 16.1 overs at the Estam Oval.
It was a total team effort, but the spin of Michelle Ariago set the tone. The youngster finished with 2 wickets at an economy of just 2.00, removing Rahma Yahaya LBW and Lightness Eluid caught by Asha Mukite in the same over.
Tanzania never recovered. A collapse of their own making saw three run-outs in the first four overs – Rebecca Martin, Suamu Hussein and Daniela Nzela all caught short thanks to sharp fielding from Rashida Tikabulwa, Irene Mutonyi, Mary Namiiro and Shadia Nabulime.
Sarah Tino, who claimed a five-wicket haul against Nigeria on Monday, was again on target with 2/ – dismissing top-scorer Mwanaidi Athuman (7) and Joan Jackson (9). Sheilah Namagoba wrapped up the tail with 2 wickets, while Mariam Birabwa chipped in with one.
If the first innings was perfect, the chase was nervy.
Chasing just 42, Uganda lost five wickets inside five overs. Openers Shadia Nabulime, Sheilah Namagoba and Mary Namiiro all fell in the first over, captain Sarah Tino followed, and Namiiro was run out as Tanzania’s Dorice Helment (3 wickets) gave the home crowd hope.
That hope was ended by a calm, unbeaten partnership between Joan Ilora and Irene Mutonyi. The duo showed composure under pressure, knocking off the remaining runs in just 31 balls to seal the win in the 10th over.
The win keeps Uganda in contention for a semifinal spot. The equation is now simple: beat Malawi on Wednesday, September 2, and hope Nigeria do them a favour against Tanzania.
The ultimate prize remains qualification for the 2027 ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh and Nepal.
