FIFA’s Game-Changer: VAR To Get Additional Authority at 2026 World Cup
FIFA is set to revolutionize the game with proposed changes to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system at the 2026 World Cup. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is considering granting VAR additional authority to intervene in crucial match-deciding situations. Two key areas of focus are incorrect corner kick awards and reviews of second yellow cards leading to dismissals.
The proposed changes aim to prevent mistakes that could alter the outcome of a match. VAR would use video replays to determine if the ball last touched a defending player before going out, ensuring fairer set-piece opportunities. This move is expected to reduce controversy and promote fairness, especially in high-stakes matches like the World Cup.
Another significant change is the review of second yellow cards. Currently, VAR can only intervene in direct red cards, but the new rule would expand its scope to include second yellow cards. This would help prevent unjust red cards and ensure balanced competition. However, some argue that this could lead to subjective interpretations and delays.
Other potential reforms include limiting VAR interventions to “clear and obvious” errors, increasing transparency in VAR decisions, and implementing tighter time limits on VAR reviews. These changes are expected to enhance the flow and fairness of the game.
The proposed changes are currently under discussion and will be voted on by IFAB in March 2026. If approved, they will take effect on June 1, 2026, just in time for the World Cup.
