Collina: VAR Checks on Corners Won’t Cause Delays
FIFA’s head of referees, Pierluigi Collina, is adamant that using VAR to check corners won’t cause delays in the game. “The main criteria is no delay,” Collina emphasized to BBC Sport. He argues that corners naturally create a brief pause in play, typically 10-15 seconds, as teams get set.
Collina believes this window allows officials to quickly check if a corner was incorrectly awarded. “In these 10-15 seconds, if the corner kick is wrongly given, everybody has the evidence that the start of play is wrong,” he said. He questions why officials shouldn’t utilize this opportunity to correct potential errors.
“Why do we have to hide our heads under the sand and hope that nothing happens on the corner kick which is taken?” Collina added, advocating for proactive use of VAR to ensure accuracy.
