Uganda’s university rugby team has made history at the FISU World University Games in Stellenbosch, South Africa, reaching the final of the men’s Rugby Sevens tournament for the first time.
The Ugandan side, representing the country at the global university competition, fell to hosts South Africa 34-7 in the final, bringing their impressive campaign to an end with a silver medal.
Despite the defeat, reaching the championship match marks a significant milestone for Ugandan university rugby, as it was the first time a Ugandan team had reached a FISU World University Games rugby final.
The tournament hosted in Stellenbosch, brought together university rugby teams from several rugby playing nations, including Japan, Canada, France, South Africa and Uganda, providing a highly competitive international platform for student athletes.
Uganda showed resilience throughout the competition to advance to the final, where they faced a strong South African side backed by home support and experience.
South Africa ultimately proved too strong in the title decider, scoring 34 points to Uganda’s seven at full time.
However, the result does little to diminish what was a historic performance by the Ugandan university team. Their run to the final represents a major achievement for university rugby in Uganda and gives the country’s young players valuable exposure at the highest level of international university sport.
The silver medal also offers a strong foundation for Uganda’s continued development in Rugby Sevens, particularly as universities continue to provide a pathway for talented players to compete on the international stage.
For Uganda, the final defeat may have ended their title dream, but their journey in Stellenbosch has opened a new chapter in the country’s university rugby history.
