Despite the civil wars that have ravaged Somalia, football remains the country’s most popular sport. The Somalia Football Federation, established in 1951, has been working tirelessly to promote the game, and the Somalia National League is attracting Ugandan footballers looking for opportunities.

This January transfer window, several Ugandan players have joined Somali clubs, taking advantage of the country’s vibrant football scene.

Jeenyo FC has welcomed Johnson Ssenyonga, a former SC Villa winger, and Kaganda Raymond to its ranks. Ssenyonga, who joined from Buganda Region League side Buwambo United Football Club, has already made an impact, scoring two goals in two matches.

Ssenyonga Johnson also featured for Kakooge Town Council, Jinja North in the FUFA Big League, Non league side Football Classroom among others.

Muwanguzi New Signing for Jazeera

Jazeera has signed Abbel Reagan Muwanguzi, who has played for Express FC JT and Mbale Heroes FC.

Dekedaha has welcomed former Busoga United player Shaka Ssozi, while Gaadiidka has bolstered its squad with Nicholas Kagaba and Owen Isabirye. Kagaba, a veteran of the Somali league, has previously played for Mogadishu City Club and Horseed, among other clubs, including SC Victoria University, URA FC, Tooro United, Onduparaka FC, and Kamwokya United in Uganda, Muhazi United in Rwanda, and Kator FC Juba in South Sudan. This is his second stint at Gaadiidka FC.

Other Ugandan players to have joined Somali clubs include Timothy Ssenfuma, who has moved to Heegan from FUFA Big League side Kiyinda Boys Football Club, and Allan Kiggundu and Tusaba Gwaidho, who have signed with Elman FC.

These signings demonstrate the strong ties between Ugandan and Somali football, with many Ugandan coaches, including Sam Ssimbwa, George Ssemwogerere, Haruna Mawa, and Hussein Mbalangu, having worked in Somalia.

The Somalia National League may be lesser-known, but it’s clear that it’s a hub for talented Ugandan players looking for new challenges. With 12 teams competing, including Mogadishu City Club, the most successful club in the country, the league is set to deliver exciting football this season.
