NPFL Elite Referee Solomon Maram Dies During Pre-Season Fitness Test in Abuja

The Nigeria football refereeing community is in mourning following the death of NPFL elite referee Solomon Aweng Maram, who collapsed and died during a pre-season fitness test on Tuesday.

According to Blueprint Newspaper, Maram, a member of the Plateau State Referees’ Council, slumped at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium while taking part in Batch A of the Nigeria Football Federation’s pre-season training programme ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

What Happened
Citing a statement from the Nigeria Football Referees’ Association (NFRA), Blueprint reports that Maram had passed the mandatory medical examination and was cleared to participate in the fitness test.

He was in the second group of referees when he suddenly collapsed close to the finish line.

The stadium medical team responded immediately and administered emergency treatment, including oxygen. He was then rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja in an ambulance stationed at the venue.

Despite efforts by medical personnel at both locations, Maram was later confirmed dead on August 18, 2026.

NFRA: “A Rare Gem Lost”
Reacting to the incident, NFRA Acting President Sir Kelechi Mejuobi described the loss as “a tragic blow” to the association, as reported by Blueprint.

“He was a rare gem and one of the best among the pack of elite referees in Nigeria. A thoroughbred match official who earned immense respect within the profession,” Mejuobi said.

He also commended the medical personnel for their quick response, stressing that emergency arrangements were in place and were activated immediately.

Mejuobi reiterated that the NFF Referees’ Committee and NFRA place high priority on the health and safety of officials during physically demanding programmes.

Tributes Pour In
The NFRA, through National Publicity Secretary Chukwudi Ejimofor, extended condolences to Maram’s family, the Plateau State Referees’ Council, and the wider football community in Plateau State.

The association said it shares in the grief of losing a valued official whose career was cut short while preparing for the new season.

Maram was regarded as one of the outstanding referees in the NPFL cadre and was expected to officiate in the top flight this season.

The tragedy has raised fresh conversations about the intensity of fitness tests and medical monitoring for match officials in Nigerian football.
