Emmanuel Arnold Okwi Announces Retirement From Professional Football
Uganda Cranes legend Emmanuel Arnold Okwi has announced his retirement from professional football, closing the chapter on a career that spanned more than a decade at club and international level.
In an emotional farewell message shared on Monday, Okwi described football as “more than just a career” and reflected on the honor of representing Uganda.
“After many unforgettable years on the pitch, the time has come for me to say goodbye to professional football.
This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life because football has been more than just a career—it has been my passion, my purpose, and a dream I have been blessed to live every single day.”
The forward said wearing the Uganda Cranes jersey and captaining the national team were career highlights he will always cherish:
“Representing my country has been the greatest honor of my journey, and wearing the Uganda Cranes jersey will forever hold a special place in my heart. Being entrusted with the captain’s armband is a privilege I will always cherish, and I will remain forever grateful for the opportunity to lead my country.”
Okwi thanked everyone who shaped his journey — from clubs and coaches to teammates, opponents, and supporters:
“To every club that gave me an opportunity, every coach who believed in me, every teammate who stood beside me, and every opponent who challenged me to become better—thank you. You have all played an important role in my journey.
To the fans, thank you for your unconditional love and unwavering support throughout the years. You celebrated my successes, lifted me during difficult moments, and reminded me every day why I fell in love with this beautiful game.”
While he is stepping away from playing, Okwi made it clear his football journey is not over. He plans to focus on developing the next generation:
“While today marks the end of my playing career, it is not the end of my journey in football. My next chapter will still be dedicated to the game I love, as I look forward to contributing to the growth of football and helping inspire and develop the next generation.”
He signed off with gratitude and a message of hope:
“As I close this chapter, I do so with immense pride, gratitude, and countless unforgettable memories. Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined, and for that, I will always be thankful.
This is not goodbye to football—it’s the beginning of a new chapter.
With love and gratitude,
Emmanuel Arnold Okwi”
