NEC FC Stunned KCCA FC in Thrilling Lugogo Derby

NEC FC kicked off the second round of the Startimes Uganda Premier League in style, defeating KCCA FC 3-1 in a thrilling Lugogo Derby.

The match saw NEC FC give debuts to four players – Richard Basangwa, Ssenoga Muhammad Kagawa, Pius Obuya, and Rashid Kawawa. Richard Basangwa scored on his debut in the 22nd minute to give NEC FC the lead.

KCCA FC equalized through Ivan Ahimbisibwe four minutes after the restart of the second stanza, but NEC FC regained the lead in the 71st minute through Seremba Joseph’s strike. Basangwa sealed the win with a brace in the 75th minute, scoring his second goal of the match. Richard Basangwa, the agile forward, was voted the Man of the Match.

The victory moved NEC FC up to seventh place with 23 points, while KCCA FC remained fifth on the table with 30 points from 16 matches. Coach Kaddu Badru Mukasa must have breathed a sigh of relief after the win against his former paymasters, and it’s clear that the team is looking to make a statement in the second round.

Basangwa’s agility certainly caused problems for the KCCA FC defense, and he’s definitely a player to watch. On the other hand, KCCA FC failed to close the gap on Vipers SC, having dropped two points earlier, putting more pressure on coach Brian Ssenyondo.

NEC FC will visit table leaders Vipers SC on the 17th of this month, while KCCA FC will host BUL FC in their next match.
