Kampala Region League Unveils New Format: Group 2 & 3 Fixtures Released
A few weeks ago, the inaugural round of the Kampala Region League wrapped up with Mutungo FC sitting proudly at the summit of the 18‑team table. In that first phase every club met each other once in a single‑leg fixture, earning two points for a win and one point for a draw. The standings at the end of Round 1 became the basis for a dramatic league re‑structure.

Splitting the Table
To inject fresh excitement and higher stakes, the 18 teams were split into two distinct pools:
- Group 2 – Comprising the top nine finishers of Round 1.
- Group 3– Made up of the bottom nine finishers of Round 1.
This bifurcation means that the early‑season form now dictates which path a club follows: a chase for the championship or a fight to avoid relegation.

Group 2 Fixtures (Saturday, 28 February)
The eagerly awaited match‑day schedule for Group 2 has been released. Highlights include:
- PCCP FC (2nd in Round 1) vs Kisugu UTD – Kakungulu Memorial Playground, Kibuli
- Mbogo FC vs Proline FC– Kawempe Muslim Playground
- Edgars FC vs Police Young FC – Kira Road Police Arena
- Born Talent vs Black Stars FC – Kyambogo College Playground
These games mark the start of the second phase where every match is a single leg , still awarding 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.

The intensity is amplified by the knowledge that the top six finishers here will graduate to Group 4– the Championship Round.
Group 3 Fixtures (Sunday, 1 March)
For the bottom nine clubs, Sunday’s programme kicks off a crucial battle for survival:
- Wembley Boys vs Lukuli Hearts FC– East High Ntinda Playground
- Water Football Clubbvs Nsambya SC – Yes Centre Nsambya Playground

- Buganda Road FC vs Kireka United(4 pm) – Express Kanyanya Playground
- Lungujja Galaxy vs Lufula SC (2 pm) – Same venue, Express Kanyanya Playground
The bottom six finishers in Group 3 will later form Group 5, the Relegation Round.
Key Points to Note
- Playing Criteria: Single‑leg matches only.
- Points System: 2 pts for a win, 1 pt for a draw.
- Financial Incentives: Each club receives a subsidy of three million Ugandan Shillings for this round.

- Rockeroom Bonus: Every player in a 25‑man match‑day squad of a winning team earns twenty thousand Ugandan Shillings.
- Squad Expansion: Teams are now allowed to register 30 licenses (up from 25), giving coaches greater flexibility.
Path to Championship & Relegation
The league architecture becomes clearer moving forward:
- Group 4 (Championship Round): Formed by the top six teams from Group 2.
- Group 5 (Relegation Round): Comprises the bottom six teams from Group 3.
- Group 6 (Hybrid Round): A unique blend of the bottom three teams from Group 3 and the top three teams from Group 4. This merger adds an extra layer of competition, ensuring that even clubs near the top must stay vigilant.

By season’s end, each team will have completed 30 matches, a figure that underscores the marathon nature of the campaign. The format not only rewards early‑season consistency (Mutungo’s early dominance) but also offers second chances through the hybrid Group 6.
Statistical Outlook
- Bonus Impact: The Rockeroom bonus translates to UGX 500,000 extra per win for a full squad – a meaningful boost to player morale and club finances.
- License Increase:The jump to 30 licenses means squads can now better manage injuries and rotations, potentially flattening the performance gap between big and small clubs.

Summary
Kampala Region League’s new format is a bold tactical shift. By splitting the table, introducing financial incentives, and designing a multi‑stage structure, the federation aims to heighten competition, improve sustainability, and give fans a longer, more engaging season. Mutungo FC may have started on top, but every team now faces a fresh challenge: survive, compete, or dominate in the upcoming Group 2 and Group 3 showdowns. The fixtures on 28 February and 1 March are just the beginning of a riveting journey that will culminate in 30 matches per club and a crystal‑clear hierarchy by season’s end.
