Morocco Stun Scotland 1-0 As Saibari’s Record Goal Leaves Tartan Army World Cup Hopes In Danger
The Tartan Army’s World Cup future now hangs by a thread after Scotland suffered a 1-0 defeat to a dominant Morocco side.
Ismael Saibari delivered the decisive blow with the fastest goal of the tournament. He struck after just one minute and 10 seconds, catching Scotland cold and silencing their fans. The strike made Saibari only the second African player in history to score in his first two World Cup matches, following in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah.
From there, Morocco took full control. Brahim Diaz was at the heart of it all. “We have a lot of talent. We have this passion for every game… we are so proud to represent our country. We will go game by game,” the Real Madrid star said after the match.
His performance backed up the words. Diaz created 3 chances in the first half alone — more than Scotland’s entire team managed before the break. He pulled the strings, constantly finding space and asking questions of the Scottish defense.
The numbers told the full story. Morocco completed 601 passes against Scotland, the most ever by an African team at a World Cup since Opta began collecting data in 1966. Only Spain, Portugal, and Türkiye have completed more passes at the 2026 World Cup so far. In control, composed, and clinical — that was Morocco.
Scotland head coach Steve Clarke had no excuses after the game. He reserved special praise for Saibari, admitting his side simply had no answer for him.
“Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and admit when a player is simply too good on the day, and Ismael Saibari was exactly that,” Clarke said.
“We spoke about him before the game. We prepared for him. We knew his quality, his movement, and his ability to arrive in dangerous areas. And yet within seconds he punished us.”
Clarke was most impressed by Saibari’s influence beyond the goal. “What impressed me most wasn’t just the goal. It was the way he influenced the entire match. Every time he got on the ball, he looked dangerous. He was brave, direct, and constantly asking questions of our defenders.”
The Scotland boss finished by acknowledging Morocco’s quality. “There are players who have good games, and there are players who make the whole team better around them. Saibari was that player tonight. He’s one of the reasons Morocco continue to look like a team capable of going very far in this competition. Credit where it’s due — he was outstanding.”
With the win, Morocco sent a statement to the rest of the tournament. For Scotland, the road to the knockout stages just got a whole lot harder.
