Dr. Donald Rukare Elected President of Commonwealth Sport
Dr. Donald Rukare, a renowned sports leader and human rights lawyer, has been elected President of Commonwealth Sport (CS) at its General Assembly in Glasgow, marking a new era for the organization. Rukare, the first President from the Africa region, brings over three decades of experience in sport, law, diplomacy, and development to the role.
Rukare’s priorities include placing athletes at the heart of Commonwealth Sport, advancing the ‘Games Reset’ initiative, and strengthening support for member Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs). He also aims to expand flagship programs like GAPS and eqUIP, which promote inclusive sport pathways and nurture youth leaders across the Commonwealth.
In his manifesto, Rukare emphasized the importance of fostering strategic partnerships and engaging new fans globally. He stated, “I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by our Commonwealth Sport family… Together, we will build on the momentum of Glasgow 2026, showcase the next generation of stars at the Malta 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games, and prepare for an inspiring centenary Games in India in 2030.”
Katie Sadleir, CEO of Commonwealth Sport, congratulated Rukare on his election, praising his bold and collaborative leadership. “His commitment to sustainable development and the values that unite our diverse family align perfectly with the vision laid out in our ‘Commonwealth United’ Strategic Plan,” she said.
