Davies Wanyama, a respected national referee, has announced his retirement from refereeing after seven years at the top.

In an emotional farewell message, Wanyama expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey, citing his faith and family as guiding forces.
Born to Rev. Emmanuel and Hellen Idah Wanyama, Wanyama, a 33-year-old from Mukono district, began his refereeing career in 2009 under Asuman Kityo Ssozi in Luwero. He became a national referee in 2019 and has officiated in various tournaments and leagues in Uganda, earning recognition and awards.

Wanyama’s educational background includes Kikubo Primary School, Kapeeka SS, Bukomero SS, Buganda Royal Institute, and Muteesa I Royal University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Theology from Uganda Baptist Seminary and Zoe University, respectively.
As treasurer of Buganda National Referees, Wanyama helped acquire land for the organization in Kayunga, which features a pineapple project. He is a CAF C licensed coach, FIFA/UEFA certified Fitness Coach (2023), and holds a Grade I FUFA Referee certification.

Wanyama’s message to upcoming referees emphasizes the importance of hard work, self-motivation, and learning from experienced officials. He highlights challenges faced by referees, including hostility from fans and officials, lack of respect, and inadequate resources. Wanyama attributes his success to his faith, family, and mentors, including Samuel Kayondo, a former FIFA international referee.
Wanyama’s legacy will be remembered through his contributions to Ugandan refereeing and his commitment to mentoring the next generation. His humility and dedication to the sport will be deeply missed. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors, including his new role as Associate Pastor at Lugazi Miracle Center Church.
