Camp Nou Workers Deported Without Pay: Subcontractor Fined

The Camp Nou renovation project has been hit with a major scandal, with 79 Turkish workers being deported without compensation after working without legal documents. The subcontractor company, Extreme Works, has been fined €1.09 million by Catalonia’s Ministry of Labour for serious labour law violations .

The workers, employed by Extreme Works, were found to be working without proper documentation, and were subsequently deported to Turkey. The Labour Inspection department has opened 218 cases related to the renovation project, with total fines amounting to nearly €3 million .

The Confederation of Labour Commission Unions (CCOO) has been vocal about the issue, with their head, Carlos del Barrio, stating that the workers were subjected to “inhumane conditions” and were forced to work long hours without proper compensation. The CCOO is calling for the regularization of the workers’ status and for the Spanish government to take action to protect their rights .

The scandal has raised concerns about the treatment of migrant workers in the construction industry and has put pressure on Barcelona to ensure that the renovation project is completed with respect for workers’ rights.
