AGF Aarhus Complete Remarkable Comeback to Reach Champions League Third Qualifying Round
AGF Aarhus produced one of the great European nights in club history yesterday, overturning a 4-1 first-leg defeat to knock out Lech Poznan and advance to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
In front of a packed home crowd in Poland, AGF won the second leg 4-1 on the night. That result leveled the aggregate score at 5-5, and after extra time could not separate the two sides, it was the Danish team who held their nerve to win 4-3 on penalties. The victory sets up a third qualifying round tie against Sabah FK of Azerbaijan.
The comeback started early. Tobias Bech opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after being played in by Kristian Arnstad, giving AGF hope and cutting the deficit to 4-2 on aggregate. Uganda’s young forward James Bogere was also involved heavily in the first half and was cautioned in the 45th minute. The visitors went into the break 1-0 up, but still with a mountain to climb.
AGF came out after halftime with even more intent. Just 10 minutes into the second half, Arnstad stepped up and converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate. The pressure continued to build, and in the 70th minute Bogere was substituted for Stefen Tchamche after putting in a hard-working shift on the wing. Danish defender Fredrik Tingager then rose highest to head home the third goal, a strike that leveled the tie at 4-4 on aggregate and sent the game into extra time.
Lech Poznan thought they had a lifeline when Filip Jagiełło scored in the 95th minute to make it 3-1 on the night. But AGF refused to give up. In the 100th minute, Iceland international Thomas Kristjansson finished off an assist from Bech to restore AGF’s two-goal lead on the night and make it 4-1. With the aggregate tied at 5-5, the match went straight to penalties. Arnstad was the only AGF player to miss, but conversions from Bech, Tingager, Jann Serra and Kristjansson were enough to edge Lech 4-3 and send the Danish side through.
Another Ugandan youngster, Hamza Ssengooba, was named in the matchday squad but remained an unused substitute as AGF completed the comeback.
James Bogere played 70 minutes and gained vital Champions League experience in AGF Aarhus’ historic comeback, while fellow Ugandan Hamza Ssengooba was an unused sub, marking a big step forward for both youngsters’ careers in Europe.
