Ghana Sacks Otto Addo Amidst Poor Showings
Ghana has sacked national team head coach Otto Addo with immediate effect, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Tuesday. The decision comes after Ghana’s poor performances in their pre-World Cup friendlies, including a 2-1 defeat to Germany and a 5-1 loss to Austria.
Addo coached Ghana at the last World Cup in Qatar but resigned after the tournament to focus on the Borussia Dortmund job. Ghana is now the third African side to change their coach ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, after Tunisia sacked Sami Trabelsi and Walid Regragui left Morocco. The 4x African champions are in group L with England, Croatia, and Panama.
Otto Addo signed a three-year contract with an option for a 24-month extension. He was reportedly earning a salary of $50,000 per month. After two years in charge, he was dismissed from his position. The GFA must now pay out the remaining year of his contract as compensation.
Ghana lost all five friendly matches:
- Nov 14, 2025: Japan 2–0 Ghana
- Nov 18, 2025: South Korea 1–0 Ghana
- Dec 16, 2025: South Africa 1–0 Ghana
- Fri, Mar 27: Austria 5–1 Ghana
- Today: Germany 2–1 Ghana
Ghana suffered defeats in each game, with the heaviest loss being 5–1 against Austria.
