Amaato Ga Kabaka: Buganda’s Royal Regatta Set to Bring Tradition, Sport and Business to the Water

From the mpingu of old to the champions of today, Buganda’s rich relationship with water is set to take centre stage as the Amaato Ga Kabaka Buganda Royal Regatta returns on 22 August 2026 at Bunjako White Sand Beach.

What began with hand-dug canals in Lubaga and the traditional spirit of Omutima Omuyanja has evolved into a modern sporting spectacle expected to combine culture, competition, entertainment and business.

Amaato Ga Kabaka is more than a canoe race. It is a celebration of Buganda’s heritage and its enduring connection to the waters of Lake Victoria.
The regatta brings together six canoes representing the clans, turning the water into a stage where tradition meets modern sport.

The rhythm of drums, the energy of paddlers and the cheers of supporters are expected to create a unique atmosphere on the shores of Bunjako.
The event also seeks to give traditional canoe racing a modern identity, with the ambition of making it comparable to major water sporting events around the world while maintaining its distinctly Buganda character.

From traditional canoes to drone cameras capturing the action from above, Amaato Ga Kabaka represents a journey from the past into the future.

Beyond sport and culture, the regatta is also positioned as an opportunity for business, tourism and community participation, bringing together supporters of the Kabaka, clan communities, entrepreneurs and visitors.
With the message “Kwata enkanga. Oke munyanja. Olemme kulya maluma,” the call is clear: come to the water, feel the drums, support the clans and witness a celebration of Buganda’s identity.

On 22 August, all roads lead to Bunjako White Sand Beach for a day where six canoes, one lake and one kingdom come together.
Amaato Ga Kabaka: The water belongs to us.
