Meet Wambuzi Yusuf: Mpigi Mixed’s Attacking Midfielder With Big Dreams

Wambuzi Yusuf is a name Ugandan football fans should get used to. Born on 23rd August 2007 in Rwanda Village, Jinja District, the attacking midfielder is already making waves with his talent, vision, and hunger to succeed. The son of Miss Namulondo Sister and the late Mr Muhammad Yusuf, Wambuzi grew up with football at his feet and a mother who believed in his dream from day one.

Wambuzi’s journey started at Rwanda Young before he caught the eye at Amerigo Youth Soccer Academy under coach Boban. It was his mother who fueled that early passion, buying him most of the equipment he needed when resources were tight. “My mummy inspired me to play football because she bought me most of the football equipment I needed at the time,” he says. That support laid the foundation for a career built on hard work and gratitude.

On the pitch, Wambuzi is left-footed and plays with confidence beyond his years. His style and ambition draw inspiration from two very different role models. Locally, he looks up to Steven Mukwala, the Ugandan striker who has played for Vipers SC, URA, Maroons FC, Asante Kotoko in Ghana, Simba SC in Tanzania, and currently Al Nasser in Libya. Internationally, his idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, a player he admires for his discipline, playing style, and unmatched achievements.

The 17-year-old’s best moment so far came last season when he finished as top scorer for Mpigi Mixed SS FC in the Buganda Province league. It was the perfect reward for years of development through Rwanda Young, Amerigo Youth Sports Academy, and Busoga United Junior Team. He later joined Mpigi SS and earned promotion to Mpigi Mixed SS FC, where he has continued to grow under the guidance of coach Eddie Kasozi. “I have learnt a lot under his guidance,” Wambuzi notes.

Like every player, he has faced setbacks. His worst moment came in 2023 when he failed to qualify from the group stages with his school team at the USSSA Boys Football U20 Championship. But that disappointment only sharpened his resolve. His dream is clear: to play in the Uganda Premier League, compete professionally, and represent the Uganda Cranes on the national stage. With that goal in mind, Wambuzi believes he can reach the top tier and the national team within the next five years.

Off the pitch, Wambuzi keeps things simple. His favorite meal is posho and beans, and he spends his free time swimming, touring new places, and reading novels.

He counts Kiyemba Patrick, Moses, and Gilbert among his closest friends. Focused, grounded, and driven by family, Wambuzi Yusuf is a young talent with the mindset to match his ability. If his early progress is anything to go by, Jinja may have just produced the next big star for Ugandan football.
