Mbappé Hits 58 As France Survive Scare To Beat Senegal 3-1

France opened their 2026 World Cup account with a 3-1 win over Senegal, but the scoreline flatters a performance that only came alive after halftime. Kylian Mbappé was the difference-maker, scoring twice to surpass Olivier Giroud as France’s record goalscorer and adding another World Cup milestone for good measure. Bradley Barcola’s debut strike sealed the points, yet Deschamps will know his team were pushed hard by a Senegal side that refused to accept the script written in 2002.
Senegal started like a team with nothing to lose. They were sharper, braver, and closer to scoring.

Jackson crashed a shot against the post midway through the first half, and the rebound looped off Maignan’s boot and away from danger. Right before the break, Mané’s low cross found Sarr unmarked six yards out, but he blasted over. France looked sluggish and disconnected. Mbappé barely saw the ball, and for 45 minutes it felt like history could repeat itself — another opening-day shock for Les Bleus.
The second half was a different France. Mbappé demanded the ball and took control. He was denied a penalty after a VAR review when Mané’s challenge was judged fair, but he bounced back quickly. Olise slid a pass through, Mbappé turned and finished past Mendy for his 13th World Cup goal. Senegal hit back instantly through Jackson, but the offside flag denied them.

With France growing in confidence, Rabiot threaded a perfect pass and Barcola, fresh off the bench, chipped Mendy 131 seconds into his World Cup debut to make it 2-0.
Senegal weren’t done. Teenager Ibrahim Mbaye marked his name in the record books with a sharp finish from a tight angle, becoming the youngest African scorer in World Cup history at 18 years and 143 days. The response from France was instant and brutal. Mbappé picked up the ball from distance and unleashed a thunderous strike that restored the two-goal cushion. Those were goals number 57 and 58 for his country, moving him past Giroud’s 56 and past Just Fontaine as France’s top World Cup scorer. Only Miroslav Klose’s 16 World Cup goals now stand between him and the all-time record.
France escaped without defeat, but not without warnings. They were saved by the woodwork again the fifth time since 2022 and were second-best for long stretches before Mbappé took over.

Senegal leave New Jersey with pride: they competed, they scored, and they unearthed a future star in Mbaye. For France, it’s three points, a record broken, and a reminder that in tournament football, one player can change everything. Group I is theirs to lose now, with Norway and Iraq next.
Full-Time: France 3-1 Senegal
Scorers: Mbappé 66’, Barcola 82’, Mbappé 90’ | Mbaye 89’
