Former Vipers Midfielder Rejoins Buddu for 2026 Masaza Cup

The 2026 Masaza Cup roared to life on Saturday, June 13th at Mubende PTC playground, with Buweekula and Kyadondo playing out a cagey 0-0 draw. But beyond the opening result, the big story coming out of the tournament is the return of an old hero.

Buddu Ssaza FC have completed the signing of experienced midfielder Kalega Hassan Gata, a player who helped them lift the title back in 2016 and was voted Most Valuable Player that year. His return adds serious experience and leadership to a Buddu side chasing more glory.

Kalega’s comeback is made possible by new Masaza Cup rules that now allow players not actively featuring in the FUFA Big League or Uganda Premier League to take part. With squads across the tournament beefing up with seasoned campaigners, Buddu have moved quickly to secure a player who knows exactly what it takes to win this competition.

Before sealing his return to Buddu, Kalega spent time training with Kyagwe Ssaza FC, but a deal could not be agreed.

That opened the door for Buddu to bring back one of their own, and the move was finalized without delay.

The midfielder’s journey has taken him across Ugandan football. He first made his name with Ayoo FC from Kyotera before moving on to top-flight sides like Vipers SC Police FC , URA FC among. Now, at a different stage of his career, Kalega returns to the grassroots tournament where he once shined brightest. For Buddu fans, it feels like a full-circle moment — the 2016 MVP coming back to guide a new generation.
