Cape Verde Stun Spain With Historic 0-0 Draw On World Cup Debut
Cape Verde announced themselves on the world stage in Atlanta with a heroic 0-0 draw against European champions Spain. The Blue Sharks became the first African nation in 24 years to avoid defeat on their World Cup debut.
Spain dominated possession but found no way through Cape Verde’s disciplined low block. Coach Pedro Leitão Brito set his team up with 10 men behind the ball, and the defensive wall proved almost impregnable. Goalkeeper Vozinha was outstanding throughout, pulling off key saves to deny Spain’s stars and earning Man of the Match. The Blue Sharks defended with courage and organization, showing that World Cup debutants can still shock the favorites.
The result continues Spain’s strange record in World Cup openers. Despite being tournament favorites, La Roja have now failed to win their first game in 4 of the last 5 World Cups. After losing to Switzerland in 2010, being hammered 5-1 by the Netherlands in 2014, drawing 3-3 with Portugal in 2018, and thrashing Costa Rica 7-0 in 2022, they were held again in 2026. Only one win in five attempts.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente admitted Cape Verde deserved credit. “They defended with ten men and that made it difficult for our players. Their low block was almost impregnable so it was a game of patience. Vozinha was active all through and deserves MOTM,” he said. De la Fuente added that the result is a reminder no team at the World Cup should be underestimated, and vowed to work with captain Rodri to correct mistakes before the next game.
For Vozinha, the night was emotional. “I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents when I was a kid, and they could not be there. They passed away a few years ago. My mum could not be here either for a VISA issue, and the money we had to pay for it,” the goalkeeper said after his heroic display.
Cape Verde’s debut will go down as one of the tournament’s early stories. They defended with heart, denied Spain, and made history. If they keep this level, the Blue Sharks will be no easy opponent for anyone in Group.
