Troost-Ekong Bids Farewell to Super Eagles.
In a poignant announcement, William Troost-Ekong has officially retired from active play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, marking the end of an illustrious international career.
Despite hanging up his boots, the legendary defender will still be part of the squad’s journey to Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, albeit in a supportive, non-playing capacity.
Troost-Ekong’s experience and expertise will undoubtedly be invaluable to the team as they look to bounce back stronger in the tournament.
Troost-Ekong’s international career with the Super Eagles is etched in the memories of Nigerian football fans. He made his debut for Nigeria in 2015 in an AFCON qualifier against Chad, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey.
He went on to form a formidable defensive partnership with Leon Balogun, famously known as “The Oyibo Wall,” which became a hallmark of Nigerian football. His contributions were instrumental in Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 World Cup, cementing his status as a stalwart of the team.
However, his finest moment came at the delayed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he captained Nigeria to the final and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), a testament to his exceptional leadership and defensive prowess.
